An officer from the Local Police in Carballo was killed by a drunk driver on Friday night.
The incident occurred at around 05:00 on Saturday morning when the officer was involved in an alcohol and drug check point in the Labradas area of the municipality.
The officer, a resident of Cerceda in A Coruña, was carrying out a breathalyser test on a driver when the second vehicle approached and crashed into the individuals.
The policeman, José Luis Garea, was rushed to the Carballo health centre, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver who ran over the officer was arrested and has tested positive for alcohol, and will now be brought before the courts.
