Officers from the Guardia Civil were surprised when they stopped a 31-year-old cyclist in the Villaviciosa area, carrying an unusual load on his bicycle.

A number of concerned people had alerted the officers to the man riding dangerously on the road. The cyclist was observed cycling along the main section of the road, rather than the hard shoulder where he should have been, and was seen to be swerving as he approached.

The officers found that the man had two bottles of wine affixed to his cycle, which the man freely admitted was in order to quench his thirst on his long ride.

The officers were less surprise that an alcohol test proved positive, with a reading of 0.51 and 0.48 mg / l, in expired air in the double test, where the allowed limit is 0.25. The man was subsequently reported for exceeding the allowed alcohol rate to ride a bike on a public road.

Once again, it is important to note that a cyclist is classed as a vehicle when on the road and therefore the rider is governed by the same laws as drivers of other vehicles, such as a car, and you are not allowed to ride a bicycle having consumed excessive alcohol.
