Portuguese Man O War Invasion Spreads Further
The coastal invasion of the most dangerous jellyfish in the Mediterranean has extended throughout the province of Alicante.
On Friday, red flags flew on the beach of El Campello and the city of Alicante, as well as across the Elche municipality, where the beaches of Carabassí, El Altet and Arenales del Sol were also closed to swimmers.
The increased appearance of jellyfish on the beaches has been a problem for a few years now, with many ecologists blaming over-fishing for causing the problem by upsetting the delicate ecosystems along the Mediterranean.
Bathers are reminded that when the red flags fly on the beaches then entry to the sea is prohibited, and these warnings must be observed, whatever the apparent conditions of the sea.
