Budget Airport Thieves Arrested

Published

Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested two men, aged 29 and 31, who had devised a clever plan which allowed them to steal over 36 thousand euro worth of goods from retail outlets.

The clever thieves had identified a usually untouched retail zone for their offences, the stores located in Alicante-Elche airport.

Upon receiving reports of the theft of 225 bottles of perfume, valued at 28,000 euro, investigators began to check CCTV footage. A second report of the theft of 35 pairs of sunglasses, valued at 8,000 euro, allowed the officers to identify the same people in both events, thus indicating that the pair had travelled through the airport twice in one month.

However, as the investigation continued, the officers discovered that the pair hadn´t travelled at all but had rather bought cheap airline tickets online, with no intention of flying, and by using false identities and different bank cards.

The pair then used their boarding passes to access the “airside” area of the facility, steal their booty, and then immediately exit in the midst of other passengers who had arrived from flights into Spain.

If the pair had stopped their thieving spree at that point, there was a slim chance they would have gotten away with it, but alas the officers decided to set up surveillance at the airport and, after a few nights of observing the same timeframe of the previous offences, they were spotted by an officer on the team as they passed through security, resulting in their arrest.
