Spanish airline Iberia has become the world´s first airline to offer the facility for passengers to download and print their own baggage tags from its website.
The MyBagTag service can be used on Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum flights on their domestic flights, soon to be extended to all European destinations.
When a passenger logs on to the www.iberia.com website to check in, the system offers them the alternative to specify the number of items for the hold, and then download and print unique labels for each of them. The standard A4 piece of paper is then to be folded into quarters, which is then to be places into a reusable plastic wallet which can be collected at the airport.
The aim is to reduce the check-in time for passengers even more, with many who choose to check-in on line still facing queues as their luggage requires separate passage through the process. The automatic system has been tested in recent months in a number of Spanish airports, and has given a 100% success rate, so far.
The concept of MyBagTag falls into the recommendations of air travel body IATA, and their “Fast Travel” initiative, in which they want to see more customer participation in check-in, boarding, and incident-resolution procedures. In 2012 Iberia was one of only six of the world´s airlines to receive IATA’s Gold Fast Travel Award for its accomplishments in this area.
