BUSY SUNDAY FOR FIRE FIGHTERS

Serra de Mariola

A major incident alert was declared on Sunday night after a forest fire took hold in Serra de Mariola Bocairent, in an area close to a fire last year which destroyed 500 hectares of land.

Air and ground crews are battling into the night to control the spread, with volunteers assisting where possible. The air support was stood down at around 22:30, allowing ground crews to continue.

This fire was declared “controlled” at 22:42, with initial estimates of dame put at 5 hectares.

Sunday had already been a particularly busy day for fire fighters. A fire in a building on calle José Navarro Ors in the Carrús area, north of Elche, resulted in a man and his son having to be treated for burns, a third person treated for an anxiety attack and the evacuation of the entire building after the alarm was raised at 13:20.

Three tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with additional support from the fire stations at Crevillente, who sent one unit, and Almoradí who sent two. Around 20,000 litres of water was pumped through the tenders, indicating the ferocity of the flames. The fire was finally brought under control at 18:48.

Meanwhile, whilst those fire fighters were trying to control the blaze in the building in Elche, a forest fire was taking hold at the beach of La Marina.

Witnesses report seeing a column of smoke at around 15:00 and air support attended the scene of this fire with a helicopter scooping water from an inland basin and dropping it onto the flames. Two of the tenders fighting the Elche blaze were sent at around 18:00, to assist the forest fire fighting teams who were already on the scene, also supported by crews from other neighbouring stations.

It is estimated that around 4,000 square metres of shrubbery have been destroyed in this fire.

A fire which started in the kitchen at the Hotel Temple de Ponferrada kept fire fighters in Castilla y León busy on Sunday too, although that fire was said to be causing a considerable amount of smoke, rather than fire damage.
