Around forty passengers were injured on Saturday night when the bus they were travelling in crashed on an embankment on the A-70 Motorway in Alicante.
A total of 49 passengers were on the bus, which was travelling from La Junquera heading towards the ferry service to Algeria, when the incident occurred at kilometre 17 of the ring road that connects the A31 with the A7.
The crash happened at around 8pm, to which three SAMU paramedic units attended the scene, along with four SVB´s and three TNA´s, the first arriving within minutes due to the proximity of the crash scene to an ambulance base, the coach almost landing in the grounds of the base as it hurtled off the motorway embankment. Fire fighters and other emergency teams also attended.
Six people suffered serious injuries, a further five were injured of a lesser severity, and around thirty were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The most seriously injured passengers were taken to the General Hospital of Alicante and San Juan.
The road was reopened at around 11 pm, although the ambulances were still operating a ferry service taking passengers from the scene to the hospital. Two cranes also attended with a view to removing the vehicle.
Four of those injured remain in hospital on Sunday, described as “serious but stable”, with the total number of injured people confirmed as 45 by hospital staff..

The Mayor of Los Alcázares, Anastasio Bastida, presented the ladies of Spangles Harmony Chorus with the gold medal that they won at the Convention of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, which took place in Benalmádena on 13 April.
Spangles performed a concert last Wednesday at the Salon de Plenos of the Ayuntamiento of Los Alcázares, where the mayor gave out the medals and remarked that he had never kissed so many ladies at one time.
This is the second gold medal won by the chorus, celebrating another year as Champions of Spain and Portugal. Their Musical Director, Gail Grainger, remarked “The chorus has worked very hard over the last 12 months to ensure that we brought the gold back to Los Alcázares and we are very proud to do so for the second time”. Chorus members are now busy raising funds so that Spangles can represent Spain overseas. Various events have been arranged, so please check their Facebook page or their website for full information.
Spangles was formed in December 2004 by Anthea Prentice and Lyn Baines, with only five women. Today, the choir has grown to over 40 members who rehearse every Thursday in the Las Claras Municipal Centre. Spangles welcomes new members so, if you’re looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit them at rehearsal? They meet every Thursday from 10.30am to 1.00pm.
