REFURBISHMENT TO PLAZA VIEJA POSTPONED
The Regional Government has said that the 2nd phase of refurbishment to Almeria’s Plaza Vieja, at a cost of 11 million euros, will be put on hold due to a shortage of available funds and that other outstanding work in the province will be prioritized, but despite the current financial situation the regional Administration are still committed to the completion of the Almanzora motorway and the improvements to the road system around Roquetas
Funded by the city of Almeria there is simply no cash for the second phase of improvements to the Plaza Vieja and as, according to the Government Delegate of the Board in Almería, Sonia Ferrer, there is unlikely to be any financial support from the Government of Andalusia the as promised works will not be restarted.
But she confirmed that completion of the Almanzora motorway and the improvements to the road network around Roquetas de Mar are both “priorities” of the Regional Administration and will be finished.
The Board, for the moment, cannot afford to spend 11 million euros on non essential work, says Ferrer.
However the Board has set a “goal” of finishing off the Almanzora motorway as soon as possible, 87% of which has already been constructed, with an investment of 45 million euros. Any further delay would jeopardize the work already completed, the councillor said.
As far as the roadworks around Roquetas de Mar are concerned, Ferrer said her intention, and that of the new regional government team in Almeria is to “re-establish and resume the relationship” with the town of Roquetas de Mar with the aim of further progressing the work once the acquisition of necessary land can be resolved by the Board.
