The Mayor of Almería, Luis Rogelio Comendador has visited the School of Music and Arts (EMMA) to check the reforms that have been undertaken in what was the former Youth House and, after an investment of over one million euros, borne by the Board Protect program and municipal funds, have allowed the city to create a centre “that are a real pride and that will be the envy of many cities.” The Mayor continued, “With this reform it not only fulfils an election commitment, but also dignify and beautify the city giving it a new facility and another landmark building, the Central Market, has also recently been renovated.”

The School of Music and Arts has an area of over 1,300 square meters and isdivided into six levels, although for now, just three are in use. It has an initial capacity of over 450 seats, and as well as specialising in music, such as piano, violin or viola, it will also feature musical and cultural activities that enrich the cultural offerings of the city itself. Therefore, the Mmayor, who was accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco, said there was much to be proud of, “Our city is slowly becoming a true cultural city. Proof of this is the great reception and acceptance that EMMA is having and we had more than a hundred pre-registrations in one day:”

Deogracias Gomez, manager of the company that is part of the joint venture to run the centre for a period of 25 years renewable for two terms of five years, has also spoken about the new centre opening ensuring that the aim of the project is not only cultural, but also social and everyone who wants to enjoy music can use the Municipal School of Music and the Arts as a reference point, “The EMMA aims to be a centre that meets a social and cultural work aimed at all citizens, open to any style or tradition. As a school we aim to contribute to the integral development of Almeria through music and the arts, provide specialist teaching quality and foster the development of musical culture and the arts and to promote values such as solidarity or working in team. In short: everyone can enjoy the music, art and culture in general.”

It is expected that most of the students will be youngsters but not only those who want to learn musical skills with instruments, but also musical language, art, dance, performance. “This will be a cultural and artistic centre of Almeria with facilities for generations and where it is to carry out a great work of cultural dissemination,” says Luis Rogelio Rodríguez-Comendador.

The centre will have its official opening next month for the 2012/2013 year but registration will remain open until 23rd March. Registration for the start of this academic year opened on 3rd September and in just 2 days more than 100 pre-registrations were received, especially for children 3 to 6 years old who want to move to form parts of the classes of ‘Music in Motion.’

The specialities that can be studied in the EMMA will include accordion, electric bass, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, electric guitar, flamenco guitar, semi-electric guitar, flamenco percussion, piano, saxophone, vocal technique and singing, trombone, violin, viola, music theory and the art of ‘Music and Movement’ for students from 3 years. From this, there is no age limit, so the EMMA has its doors open to all who want to learn any of the above specialities. Registration for the Municipal School can not only in person but also through the centre’s website, www.emmaalmeria.es in order to make it more accessible to everyone.
