A brother and sister cope with tragic loss, hard work and World War I in ‘Families are Forever’

TORREVIEJA, Spain – Author L. A. Brand tells a story about resilience and the spirit of survival in her uplifting new novel “Families are Forever” (published by AuthorHouse).

Brand’s coming-of-age tale is a classic story of rags to riches set in England in the years leading up to World War I. Centered around two children, George and Charlotte, the book chronicles their childhood, years fraught with tragedy, loss, struggle and hard work.

Born to a Jewish mother who was disowned by her family after she married James, a silk weaver, George and Charlotte were forced to grow up fast. After their father was killed, their mother sunk into a deep depression and drowned herself, feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of raising two children alone.

The orphaned siblings were left behind to fend for themselves. “Families are Forever” recounts the various twists and turns life throws at them, working in silk mills and migrating from gypsy camps to fairgrounds. When World War I breaks out, a whole new set of obstacles await them.

“When I started researching my family history, I discovered that there were different cultures and I decided to write a story that would bring them all together,” Brand writes. “No matter what society you are in, you can still control your own life if you really want to.”
