EUROPEAN DAY is celebrated throughout the whole of the European Union on 9th May each year.
This year, European Day falls on a Thursday and celebrations will take place, as always, in the main town square, Plaza de Constitución in Torrevieja throughout the morning of Thursday 9th May.

An extensive and varied programme of entertainment, representative of distinct European countries, has been organised especially for this special day. EVERY ONE IS WELCOME TO JOIN IN THE CELEBRATIONS!!

Meanwhile, over the following weekend and in the ‘Jardin del Mediterraneo’ park, other European residents, representing their own countries of origin, will be fighting for honours in the “10th Annual International (European Day)” petanca tournament”. Because of increased demand, the tournament will take place over two days with the prize giving ceremony scheduled for around 16.00h on Sunday 12th May.

“EUROPEAN DAY 2013”PROGRAMME (PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN, TORREVIEJA):-
THURSDAY 9th MAY from 10.30h PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN.

From 10.30h on Thursday 9th May in the Plaza de la Constitución, Scottish piper, WILLE HUME will announce the start of the EUROPEAN DAY celebrations.

At 11.00h, the traditional civic act will take place with the presence of the Mayor of Torrevieja, Don. Eduardo Dolon Sanchez. Eduardo will be joined by young representatives of the local European community in the person of schoolchildren who will offer their own interventions before the official raising of the E.U. flag and the accompanying anthems to Torrevieja, Valencian Community, Spanish national anthem and, of course, to the ‘Hymn to Europe’.

European entertainment then continues throughout the morning of Thursday 9th May in the main town square with a performance of Sevillanas dancing by a group of French visitors! Flamenco dance group, “DUENDE ANDALUZ” has planned its annual visit from France to Torrevieja to coincide, inevitably, with our spectacular “Feria de Mayo” (Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th May inclusive) and will offer a spectacular exhibition of this, very Spanish, style of dance.

Following on in the lineup of Euro-entertainment will be ‘live’ jazz, offered by the specially formed, “EUROPEAN ALL STARS INTERNATIONAL JAZZ BAND”. This ‘unique’ traditional jazz band has been formed from seven (maybe more!) local musicians of distinct nationalities especially for EUROPEAN DAY and (as far as we know) will only offer this one-off concert. Therefore, this is an opportunity not to be missed!!!

The members of the “EUROPEAN ALL STARS INTERNATIONAL JAZZ BAND” are:
ED VAN HERPEN (Holland) DRUMS.
GEOFF HULL (England) BASS.
PAULO OLIVO (Italy) PIANO.
MIKE SUMMERS (Australia – well, its almost Europe!) TRUMPET.
JOHN HUTCHINGS (England) TROMBONE.
JESUS BECERRA SANCHEZ-PRIETO (Spain) GUITAR.
ROY HUBBARD (England) CLARINET.

The ‘European Day’ celebrations in the town centre will end at around 14.00h, just in time to enjoy a leisurely lunch in a local restaurant or, perhaps, a visit to the ‘Feria de Mayo’ in the harbour!

This year’s EUROPEAN DAY celebrations, as every year, promise to be extremely entertaining provided, as always, the weather is kind to us. All ‘European Day’ events are open to the public and Europeans of all nations, are warmly invited to join in this special occasion.

THURSDAY 9th MAY – “EUROPEAN DAY” – the ‘place to be’ is Torrevieja’s main town square!! DON’T MISS OUT!!!
