Hail causes multiple pile up

A severe hailstorm caused two multiple collisions involving at least 50 cars in the municipality of Honrubia de la Cuesta, in the province of Segovia, tonight.

At least thirteen people were injured as a result of the impacts. One of them, a man in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and had to be evacuated by helicopter to University Hospital in Burgos.

Two other people have been displaced to the Hospital of Segovia, while the remaining ten have been transferred to hospital in Aranda de Duero (Burgos).

The crashes occurred simultaneously at around 19.00 hours at kilometer 140 of the A-1, one in each direction of the road, which records intense traffic on Sunday. The most serious incident occurred in Burgos direction, with more than 40 vehicles affected and ten injured, including the man who has suffered serious injury.

In the opposite direction five vehicles were involved and three passengers were injured. The accidents have caused considerable disruption to the road network.
