Work began this week to clean the pine forests of the beaches of La Marina, which are the responsibility of the municipal environment brigade, with four people and a grinding machine, as well as three other groups of municipal workers from other departments. The municipal town hall of Elche noted that some jobs are “very important” to maintain cleanliness in the area, especially for the summer to avoid any accidents that may occur, with increasing affluence.

The Department of Health has withdrawn one of the doctors from the health centre in Guardamar. The socialist municipal group indicates that this reduction in healthcare will generate worse attention to patients and increased queues. The PSOE criticized the fact that the workload would be distributed among the other doctors, and added that the professionals “cannot attend to the amount of work they have”.

A resident´s association of San Miguel has reported that they have filed a complaint with the department of health, and with Torrevieja hospital, relating to the withdrawal of a doctor from the health centre in the town. The group claim that they have been waiting for more than 30 days without so much of an acknowledgement in response, which they say shows the “neglect” to the health service.

The Anse environmental group has confirmed that it has detected the presence of otters in Barriomar, at the entrance of the city of Murcia. “Most likely, the otters are already using the riverbed in the city for food. Yet their largely nocturnal and elusive character, has prevented detected before”, according to a statement from them. Anse technicians have confirmed the presence of this species in Contraparada in 2010.

The councillor for youth in Callosa de Segura has organized a course on the electric guitar, which will allow various levels of groups to learn how to use the instrument, lead by an acclaimed teacher in the art form. Registration is open via the town hall at a cost of 15 euro, although students must bring their own guitar.

A thesis presented by academics at the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche, claims to offer advice to law enforcement officers seeking to catch drunk drivers, through the production of a “hot spot” map of likely areas where drivers who have consumed alcohol are more likely to be. According to the study, the most likely area where these drunk drivers are to be found coincides with leisure areas and areas where more alcohol is sold. It is also more likely that drivers will be drunk when moving away from these areas, and there will be a bigger concentration at weekends, Saturday night and Sunday morning in particular. The study is based on historic data relating to detections of drivers who were found to have given a positive breath test.
