ACCIDENTAL DEATH RECORDED IN TODDLER DROWNING CASE

A UK Coroner´s court has ruled on the tragic death of a two year old girl who died in a swimming pool in a property in San Miguel last year, recording “accidental death” as the cause.

Baby Izzy had come on holiday with parents Deborah Ridgeway and Patrick Crump, and her older sister, in August 2012, staying at Miss Ridgeway’s grandparent’s property.

The hearing heard that the family had spent most of their last day in and around the pool. At one point they all got out of the pool and Mr Crump, along with the eldest daughter, went inside to watch television, whilst baby Izzy joined Miss Ridgeway on a sun lounger.

Mr Crump gave evidence stating that once the TV show had finished he went back outside and “saw Debs on the sun lounger, facing away from the water, and Izzy in the pool.” He then stated that he dived into the pool to pull Izzy out and attempted resuscitation.

Mr Crump continued, “Izzy knew she was not supposed to go into the pool without her water wings”, which was a fact Miss Ridgeway emphasised, saying “Both of them were told not to go near the pool unless either me or Pat was with them and they were wearing armbands. Izzy would even say it back to me.”

Recording a verdict of accidental death, deputy coroner Mr Barkley said: “Clearly she was playing in and around the pool, and appeared to understand she was not allowed in the pool without at least one of her parents or without armbands. Exactly how it was she ended up in the pool will, I regret to say, never be known.”
