The tragic scene

Alicante Fire fighters discovered the charred body of a person inside a burning vehicle on Tuesday, in a tunnel near the N-332 as it passes through the town of El Campello in Alicante, towards the A7 motorway.

The lifeless body was burnt to such a degree that the sex or identity was impossible to establish, pending a forensic examination. The fire service attended to extinguish the fire, along with a medical team who could do nothing but confirm the victim was dead. According to sources involved in the investigation, the vehicle was a small, four wheeled, low powered car, operating on a moped license plate.

The investigation later revealed that the victim was in fact a man, and he had been found handcuffed and sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Although the identity was still to be confirmed, the police believe him to be the owner of the vehicle, who has not been seen since before the incident and his mobile phone is not connecting.

The vehicle is registered to a 47 year old from a village in Jaen, who has a history of offences ranging from sexual assault to drug trafficking. There was also a record of the Guardia Civil attending a recent incident in which the man was involved in a fight.

DNA samples are being examined to ascertain the identity of the victim, although the police are not ruling out anything at this stage, a case file has been opened on the assumption that the victim was murdered.
