FORTY INJURED IN ALICANTE BUS CRASH

The scene of the crash

Around forty passengers were injured on Saturday night when the bus they were travelling in crashed on an embankment on the A-70 Motorway in Alicante.

A total of 49 passengers were on the bus, which was travelling from La Junquera heading towards the ferry service to Algeria, when the incident occurred at kilometre 17 of the ring road that connects the A31 with the A7.

The crash happened at around 8pm, to which three SAMU paramedic units attended the scene, along with four SVB´s and three TNA´s, the first arriving within minutes due to the proximity of the crash scene to an ambulance base, the coach almost landing in the grounds of the base as it hurtled off the motorway embankment. Fire fighters and other emergency teams also attended.

Six people suffered serious injuries, a further five were injured of a lesser severity, and around thirty were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The most seriously injured passengers were taken to the General Hospital of Alicante and San Juan.

The road was reopened at around 11 pm, although the ambulances were still operating a ferry service taking passengers from the scene to the hospital. Two cranes also attended with a view to removing the vehicle.

Four of those injured remain in hospital on Sunday, described as “serious but stable”, with the total number of injured people confirmed as 45 by hospital staff..
