One of the people who drowned in Spain at the weekend has been confirmed as a 42 year old serving Guardia Civil officer.
Luis Manuel Hermosa González was a Lieutenant from the Organised Crime and Drug squad from Barbate and died as a result of drowning after he attempted to retrieve his daughter´s surf board.
The 112 emergency centre received a call at 20:20 hours on Saturday, alerting them that a man appeared to be having difficulty getting out of the water.
A life guard attempted a rescue but was unable to reach the man, due to the conditions in the water. Additional support from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and other emergency teams then responded, rescuing the body of the man, who they attempted to resuscitate for 20 minutes, before confirming his death.
The officer was involved in a number of high profile cases in the past and was scheduled to be transferred to another location. He leaves two children, of 17 and 8 years of age.
