The estimated harvest of table grapes will be 146,121 tons, an increase of 16% over last year, according to combined statistics from the Agricultural Associations Services and District Agricultural Offices, mainly thanks to a more crops of seedless varieties, up 26%, as well as the Red Globe, up 13%.
The Director General of Agro-Food Industry and Agricultural Training, Ángel García Lidón, said, “good weather conditions for this crop, both in bloom and in fruit set, have led to the production of more clusters and a good size”.
Production of Napoleón and Dominga varieties has remained stable, which is good news for Spanish farmers as this variety fell by 18% in Italy.
In 2012 the Murcia region was the largest producer of table grapes, with 125,910 tons, equivalent to 53% of national production, followed by the province of Alicante, with 34% and Andalusia, with 7%. However, Valencia offers the largest acreage for this type of grape growing, at 44%, with Murcia in second place with 36%.
The main customers of these grapes, who take 95% of Murcia´s produce alone, were the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands, who take a total of 84% combined, the remaining going to Africa, Asia and America.
