A 46 year old Spanish man has died after consuming 6 litres of beer in 20 minutes in a drinking competition in Murcia.
The annual event in Gea y Truyols is one of the most popular parts of the celebrations of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de La Tercia, but the family of Joaquín Alcaraz García found nothing to celebrate as they buried the winner of this year´s competition.
The man, who witnesses describes as “overweight”, managed to lift the trophy before collapsing and starting to vomit. The emergency services were called to the incident which happened on Wednesday, at around 9pm, transferring the man to hospital in Corvera, where he was confirmed having died of cardio respiratory arrest.
The celebrations were halted and the funeral of the man took place on Friday, with three days of official mourning announced by the town hall.
