The Mariano Rajoy government of Spain is not all about cuts in spending, after having just approved an additional increase in the budget of the Ministry of Defence of 877.33 million euro in 2013, in order to meet the payment obligations of major weapons programs, according to the plans drawn up by the Secretary of State for Defence, Pedro Argüelles.
According to information provided by the Ministry, the 877 million will be dedicated to contributing towards 15 special weapons programs and does not include, for example, payment for any development projects such as the Pizarro tracked vehicle for the Army or for the S-80 submarine for the Spanish Armada.
Almost half of the total budget, 337.5 million euro, is destined for the Eurofighter program, whose prime contractor, EADS, will gain. Over 93 million will go towards the public shipbuilding company Navatia, who will be constructing the Juan Carlos I. Another 88.26 million will be spent on the Tiger helicopter, just slightly under 70 million will go to the frigate F-105 Cristóbal Colón, and 46.6 million will be destined for the transport aircraft Airbus A-400M.
There are also smaller projects set to receive funding, such as 34.58 million for the Spike missile program, 32.47 million euro for the howitzer 155/52 and 28 million for the combat supply ship, Cantabria. In addition, the Taurus missile has 15.08 million, another 10 for the EC-135 helicopter and 5.96 to telecommunications commitments. Finally, about two million will be devoted to complete the programs of the frigates F-100 and Leopard, and a million towards other work on ships.
Argüelles said in Congress that they would require between 800 and 1000 million euro for defence budgets for the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, outside the regular budget to meet the payments, but had they not negotiated with the companies involved, the amount to be paid this year would amount to double that, to 1.6 billion.
The government is also putting a new contract out to tender, valued at 6 million euro, including tax, for a successfully bidding company to be awarded the rights move and transport furniture on behalf of military personal, should they have to move home.
