Delays and congestion on the arterial roads of Torrevieja have become commonplace in peak holiday times, exaggerated this year by the increase in traffic visiting the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, but Torrevieja town hall has come under fire for creating even more gridlock for closing lanes whilst painting road markings on one of the busiest stretches of coastal roads in the city.
Whereas most works are suspended for the summer months as regional and national councils are aware of the problems traffic diversions would cause, Torrevieja decided to paint zebra crossings on the beach road at Los Locos, forcing traffic to use the only lane left open to travel in both directions.
With no traffic controls in place, hot drivers were getting even hotter waiting to squeeze through a gap into the path of oncoming traffic. The work is set to continue in various places in the city.
