Boat Fishing.

‘Paws Paul and Sam’ were trolling for melva tuna between 1/2 to 3/4 mile out from the big 4 star hotels when they hooked and landed a two foot plus barracuda.

See photo of Paul with his surprise, it apparently tasted great too.

A couple of weeks ago I landed a new species, a sardine, that’s a first as I’ve never heard of any being caught in the area.

See photo of me and my sardine.

‘Orca Steve’ went out with a couple of lads and trolled for 2 hours with only a small mackerel to show for their efforts.

They fished behind the harbour wall and near the Repsol garage and caught some good combers, small red snappers, pandoras and pickerels. Maybe the fish are returning to that area now.

See photo of Ben with a red snapper and a good size comber.

Steve was soon out again with some mates and they trolled for 3 hours with not even a take so maybe the tuna have moved on. The lads caught about 20 fish between them with the biggest being a red snapper just over 1lb which Steve hooked behind the harbour wall!

See photos of Graham with a striped tuna and ‘Technology Mike’ with a banded bream.

Shore Fishing.

‘Tubby Jimmy’ caught just one small sea bass when fishing from the Indalo Hotel Arm.

Six members of Albox F C fished yesterday off the rocks at the Repsol garage, 11am to 4pm

‘Dennis the Menace’ = Zero!

‘Flash Gordon’ 9 fish – 2 palometes, 1 weaver, 1 wide eyed flounder and 5 bogues.

‘Jaguar Jack’ 24 Fish – 9 palometes, 8 bogues, 2 saddle bream, 1 wide eyed flounder and 4 striped bream.

‘Tony Always Laughing’ 20 Fish, 10 palometes, 6 bogues, 2 saddled bream, 1 wide eyed flounder and 1 striped bream.

‘Dizzy John’ 8 fish, 2 palometes, 4 bogues and 2 saddled bream.

‘Squiddly Sid’ 4 fish, 1 saddled bream, 2 bogues and 1 very small horse mackerel.

A good on shore wind set small rollers onto the beach and rocks. Dennis misjudged one roller and got very wet! Jack had a big take which took his line out to sea. After a fight of 5 minutes or so it shook the hook and was gone. The sun was warm and a good day was had.

London Bill’ had just one sea bass this week fishing at Macenas.

Coarse Fishing.

Three members of the ‘Grumpy Old Men of Los Gallardos Club’ went to the Argos lake in Murcia where the water is now quite low. There were plenty of fish topping but it took Keith 2 hours to catch his first fish. At the end ‘40 Watts’ had 3 nice barbel, ‘10 o’clock’ had 2 carp and Keith just the one carp. The barbel were feeding on the top and hitting the bait hard, Keith got broken once on a 6lb hook length.

‘Baza Barry’ fished a river north of Negratin and caught small trout and one barbel of 4lb. His method was a favourite of mine, trotting a worm downstream.

Last week was the annual ‘Rods and Reels and abbey Angling Jolly boys outing “down to Arcos de la Frontera for a week’s fishing festival. The fishing this year was not as prolific as last year with the top weight being only 70 kilo´s. However, everybody had plenty of fish during the week with the total weight caught being 2610 kilo´s. (In round terms 2.5 tonnes). The week was not without its humorous moments, notably anglers having to go for a swim to get their poles back. Never relax for a moment as the fish seem to know. The best of the swimmers had to be Doug Hornblow, who as soon as the pole was taken dived from his box into the water and managed to retrieve it before it had gone a few yards. Other anglers said the water was not that cold but they had swum some 15-20 yards to retrieve their poles. The weather was not that kind to us them and they got wet Monday and Tuesday.

Winners of the Festival as follows.

1st Ian Dalzell with 236.2 kilo´s.

2nd Doug Hornblow with 232.49 kilo´s.

3rd Lenny Bolton with 211.22 kilo´s.

4th Stan Roberts with 204.11 kilo´s.

5th Dave Hoare with 177.97 kilo´s.

Latest license information.

There is a loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Lorca in Murcia. Or the new UK sea fishing license should suffice BUT although we have been told this can be used here I have not seen a copy of this rule on paper and so it could be a problem if pulled up by the police who probably don’t know about the rule.

There WAS? a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. There is talk of an agreement between all regions for any license to be used elsewhere, watch this space.

I have now been informed this method isn’t working and the authorities now suggest going through a solicitor, god forbid there are some stupid people in this world!

I’m pleased to report the Beachcomber’s three web cams are working again and the other good news is they work on both 32 and 64 bit systems and on any browser so checkout Mojacar’s weather and Mediterranean Sea conditions here. www.beachcombermojacar.com/beachcomber-webcam/

For up to date information on fishing licenses or any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. You can also contact me on Facebook @ ‘John Beachcomber Mojacar’.

Tight lines, Beachcomber John.
