HYBRID SOLAR ECLIPSE IS SEEN IN AFRICA, AMERICA, AND EUROPE

A rare solar eclipse showing the sun being completely blocked by the moon has just taken place. It was first visible in the southern United States, before moving east across the Atlantic Ocean and to the African continent where it is believed to have been most spectacular.

One of the best views of the solar eclipse was in Northern Kenya, where there was a total blackout. Other parts of Africa were also thrown into darkness. It is the first hybrid solar eclipse of its time since November 20, 1854, and it will not happen again until October 17, 2172.

This particular solar eclipse is known as a ‘hybrid’ because the extent to which the sun is obscured depends very much on where the sun is viewed from. The view will change between an annular and total eclipse during the course of its journey. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth and a total eclipse occurs when the moon, which is smaller than the sun, is at the right distance to completely block out the sun. In an annular eclipse the sun leaves a ring of sunlight around the black circle of the moon.

Local African myths attribute the event to the Moon eating the Sun and men and women from the Turkana tribe took part in a ceremony in the Sibiloi national Park in the Turkana region ahead of the event.
