OPPOSITION GROUP APPALLED BY CORRUPT POLITICIAN SUPPORT

The Torrevieja group of the Unión, Progreso y Democracia party has issued a statement deploring the fact that the former convicted mayor of the city, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo, both remains free despite his prison sentence, but they are also appalled by the Valencian parliament being used as a means of gaining support for corrupt politicians.

Even if the option for clemency is legal and valid, the political group argue that there is no reason why Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo should not enter prison pending the outcome of the appeal, rather than remain free for up to another year, despite every level of the judicial and appeals process supporting both his conviction and the sentence given when he was found guilty in November of 2012.

Local coordinator for the UPyD, José Serna, says that whilst the PP in Valencia have been busy collecting signatures to support a pardon for their colleague, a move which their party head has distanced himself from, they are “not asking for signatures to get the food in school canteens or free buses to go to school. Nor are they asking for support to reduce waiting lists and improve health care or to increase pensions”.

The UPyD has also warned that the clemency petition may be a legal shortcut to enjoy his freedom, but the case is still pending with support for his incarceration and disgust at the actions of the politicians who are showing their support for corruption is damaging both now and for the future transparency of the Partido Popular.
