Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested a 32 year old British citizen on suspicion of crimes against public health, after the vehicle he was driving was found to be carrying a large quantity of drugs.

Officers from the traffic department in Zafra stopped the vehicle on the A-66 near the town of Puebla de Sancho Pérez, Badajoz last weekend. The driver of the vehicle stopped but then decided to run on foot, but only managed to flee some 200 metres before being detained.

Officers found a backpack under the passenger seat which they then found to contain ten packets of a substance, weighing half a kilo each. The investigation determined that the contents of the packages were high-purity heroin, which would equate to 46,300 doses, “the largest seizure of this substance in Extremadura in the last 10 years”, according to the officers.

In addition to the drugs the officers seized three mobile devices from the rental vehicle during the meticulous inspection that followed.

The investigation now focuses on the origin and destination of the drugs whilst the courts in Zafra are dealing with the British trafficker, who has been detained in prison.
