The prosecutor is asking for 9 years in prison for the former head of the Partido Popular in Orihuela, who now leads her own breakaway political group, Foro Demócrata, Pepa Ferrando.
The case relates to an investigation over tenders relating to a tourism exhibition when Ferrando served as the councillor for culture and tourism under the Monica Lorente government.
It is alleged that a network of companies benefitted from over inflated contracts awarded by Ferrando, which was done outside the normal tender process to avoid public scrutiny and bidding for the awards.
As such, the prosecutor states that Ferrando “knowingly contravened the Public Procurement Act”.
