Spain has registered a total of 48,282 births in the first two months of 2021, which represents the lowest figure in the historical series, which began in 1941, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The 48,282 births in January and February 2021 also represent 14.9% less compared to the same period in 2020. By month, in February 2021 there were 24,602 births in Spain, 922 more than in January 2021. In any case, the number of births continues at a minimum and, for the third consecutive month, does not exceed 25,000.
These figures continue the trend recorded during last year, when it was found that the number of births in Spain had plummeted nine months after confinement. To date, December 2020 has registered the minimum in a month since the INE series began, with 23,226 births. The December figures also represent 20.4% less compared to the same month in 2019.
By autonomous communities, the greatest increases in the last month have been in Andalusia (4,894), Catalonia (4,267), Madrid (3,599) and the Valencia Community (2,646), compared to La Rioja (166), Melilla (77) and Ceuta (46). By provinces, the 3,599 births in Madrid, 3,121 in Barcelona and 1,341 in Valencia stand out, while Soria (32), Ceuta (46) and Zamora (51) are at the bottom.
Although the number of births has been showing a constant downward trend for several years, the decline has been accentuated nine months after the confinement of the Spanish population during the first state of alarm due to covid-19.
