The Government’s objective is for 100% of the Spanish population to have ultra-fast broadband coverage (100 Mbps) by 2025. The Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan will allocate 4,000 million euro to achieve this goal.

The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructures, Roberto Sánchez, has visited Asturias to present the investments and reforms that are going to be undertaken to extend connectivity, accelerate the deployment of 5G and promote the audiovisual sector within the framework of the Recovery Plan, Transformation and Resilience.

In the field of digital connectivity, Roberto Sánchez recalled that the Government’s objective is for 100% of the Spanish population to have ultra-fast broadband coverage (100 Mbps) by 2025, since it constitutes a fundamental instrument of territorial cohesion. “This is an achievable objective, given the significant advances in coverage that have occurred in recent years,” he assured, and made a brief review of the investments made in the extension of broadband in Asturias in recent years thanks to the Broadband Extension Program (PEBA-NGA), in total more than 22 million euro.

Although the extension program began in 2013, it was not until 2017 that aid was awarded to Asturias worth just over half a million euro. Sanchez has also emphasized the commitment of the Government of Spain to the territorial development of areas with lower population density, as evidenced by the notable increase in aid awarded in the last three years. As an example, the last call of the PEBA-NGA, resolved in December 2020, grants were awarded for an amount greater than all the calls made so far: more than nine million euro to extend broadband from 100 Mbps to 42,831 homes and commercial premises in 1,466 unique population entities.
