The Guardia Civil in collaboration with the veterinary services of the Provincial Department of Health of the Government of Aragon, have intervened more than 16 tons of food in a warehouse for the distribution of food products that were declared unfit for human consumption, thus proceeding to arrest of the owner of the distributor as the alleged perpetrator of crimes against public health, fraud and documentary falsification.
On April 11, personnel from the Veterinary Service of the Provincial Department of Health of the Government of Aragon requested the presence of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil of Calatayud to move to a food distribution warehouse, located in a population of the Comarca de Calatayud, during an inspection that was being carried out.
Given these facts, SEPRONA specialists from Calatayud went to the warehouse where they were able to verify the large amount of food products and the state in which they were found, for which they carried out an exhaustive inspection of the place and the stored merchandise.
The warehouse, of about a thousand square metres, which was sealed, was distributed in different spaces for storage and cold rooms, it presented a multitude of irregularities regarding the storage of products and sanitary conditions. Dead rodents in different locations in the warehouse, droppings of these animals and insects, dirt inside the cold rooms, a multitude of foods with past or expired best-before dates, superimposed labels with a modified expiration date suitable for sale and consumption, as well as the lack of product traceability documents.
The inspection and accounting of said merchandise, among which were beverages, canned products, meat products, nuts and various types of sweets, was carried out in several days due to the large number of units stored in said warehouse, whose weight was at 16,500 kg.
Due to all of the above, the Guardia Civil proceeded to arrest the owner of the distributor for the alleged perpetrator of crimes against public health, fraud and documentary falsification.
The SEPRONA of the Guardia Civil continues with the investigation to determine all the establishments where the products with irregularities could have been marketed.
