The Ministry of Health of the national Government will allocate 6.4 million euro this year to reinforce the promotion of healthy lifestyles in Spain through the creation and rehabilitation of healthy environments at the local level. This investment is channelled through a direct subsidy to the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

The Official State Gazette (BOE) has already published the granting of this aid, corresponding to the agreement-program signed between the Secretary of State for Health and the FEMP for this year.

This action reaffirms the commitment to municipalism expressed by the Minister of Health, José Miñones, who has endorsed the relevance of the Healthy Cities Network promoted by the FEMP.

The agreement between Health and the FEMP for 2023 is part of Royal Decree 1070/2021, of December 4, which grants the federation a total of 18.4 million euro from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) to generate healthy environments in line with the objective of prevention and health promotion. The agreements are signed annually.

Through this collaboration with the FEMP, the Ministry of Health promotes environmental and social sustainability. To this end, it promotes relevant actions to improve the health of the population, with an impact on other areas, such as the transformation of the environment to promote active transport both on foot and by bicycle, and to promote healthy physical activity in the open air.

Actions provided for in the agreement:

Infrastructures for carrying out physical activity in the open air, both functional and recreational.

Infrastructures to promote the use of bicycles that, in no case, diminish the space destined for pedestrian use.

Healthy, safe and accessible routes or circuits.

Similar investments to create healthy spaces that promote physical activity and health, as well as actions to reorganize the distribution of public space in favour of walking and cycling and to the detriment of private motorized vehicles. Among these investments are the expansion of sidewalks, the creation of outdoor play areas, safe school routes or other actions framed in tactical urbanism.

Actions to promote healthy lifestyles in childhood and adolescence, such as the design of safe itineraries for walking and cycling, the creation of areas for pedestrians and safe active play or traffic calming around schools.
