Man on trial for keeping ex-wife’s rent money

The Second Section of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands will begin to hear evidence from today, Thursday, against a man accused of keeping the money that his wife transferred to him for rent, once they separated.

The facts, according to the prosecutor’s brief, date back to July 2012, when the man signed a lease with the Balearic Housing Institute (Ibavi) for an amount of 349 euro.

In January 2019, the couple separated, nevertheless agreeing between them to jointly pay the rent subscribed.

However, from March 2019 to September 2019, the man kept the amounts that the woman deposited in his account, actually intended to pay the rent, and were not used by the man for this purpose. This was discovered on May 20, 2020, when the woman received a communication from Ibavi of the amounts owed, which amount to 1,400 euro.

The prosecutor considers the facts constituting a crime of misappropriation and asks the defendant serves 20 months in jail or the payment of the 1,400 euro.
