Today, Monday, Línea Directa will present a new comprehensive ‘anti-squatting’ insurance in order to provide coverage to the thousands of homeowners concerned about the illegal occupation of their real estate, a move which will be, the company, assures, the first insurance with this coverage in Spain.
‘Squatting’ has become a major problem in Spain, with more than 16,700 complaints last year, which means more than 45 a day. The new Housing Law provides instruments to owners to take measures both for occupants who entered by force and those who do so without violence, as is the case of those who have stopped paying the rent, being able to request the intervention of the State Security Corps and Forces provided that a series of requirements are met.
Although we will have to wait for the announcement later today to find out all the coverage and conditions of this new anti-squatter insurance holds, it will be especially interesting for homeowners in Catalonia, which leads the occupancy ranking in Spain with 42% of cases, the Valencian Community, Extremadura and Murcia, which saw the number of occupied homes increase in 2022.
Tips to avoid squatters
Whether with or without insurance, it never hurts to take precautions to avoid this problem, and these are some tricks to keep your home safe from squatters:
- Avoid hanging signs for rent or for sale.
- Install alarm and anti-squatter door.
- If you do not visit the house regularly, install timers that turn on the lights periodically to give the impression that it is inhabited.
- Do not leave the blinds completely closed, it gives the feeling of an empty house, you can use home automation systems to open and close them using an application if you cannot go in person.
- Avoid mentioning vacation outings on social networks and that the house will be empty.
