We have already seen that spring has been hot and dry, and the drought situation continues as a result, but the question is what about the next few months, and what will the weather be link in summer 2023?
The short answer is lighter and fresher. This is how, at least, the entry of summer itself is expected in the Iberian Peninsula. Especially in interior areas. There, summer is expected to tiptoe by in these first bars of the month of June, with a more pleasant thermal sensation than last year’s muggy and high general humidity. On the contrary, in areas like Galicia or the Balearic Islands it will be more like last year. The Canary Islands will be the exception, where temperatures are expected to exceed those of 2022.
Speaking of rainfall, for the first fifteen days, which are about to close, more rain was expected than what has traditionally been normal at the time. Especially on the Mediterranean side, where rain is needed after chaining numerous months of drought, according to the team at Meteored. But for the most part, that rain has not appeared.
Weather in July and August
“It would not be strange if it broke records again, like last summer,” says José Antonio Maldonado, from Meteored, adding that the greatest appearance of storms will be the main new note. “I think that throughout the summer the storms will be the protagonists in a very notorious way, with events that may leave torrential rainfall and, occasionally, large hail,” he indicates. This is anticipated by the signs of storms and showers that are more active than normal due to the wide area of low pressure.
The southern areas of the peninsula will take the brunt at the beginning, moving to the northern area as summer progresses. In addition, he points out that it will be very “erratic” with marked temperature variations. The highest temperatures will occur in the Mediterranean and the south of the Peninsula, Ceuta and Melilla, as well as the Balearic Islands and within the average in the Canary Islands.
For its part, the State Meteorological Association, AEMET, point to a warm summer with rainfall in the traditional average, according to the records of recent years. Thus, there will be generally warm temperatures for all of Spain, especially for the east of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Regarding the rains, it is expected that they will be within the historical average until August.
