Forest fires effect 97% more than 10-year average
In the first half of the year, the area affected by forest fires is 97.5% more than the 10-year average in Spain.
Specifically, from the beginning of the year to June 25, the forest area affected by the fires rose to 58,810 hectares (ha).
Despite the increase in the average, it is 16% less compared to the same period in 2022 (69,960 ha), but, as mentioned, 97.5% more compared to the average of the last 10 years (29,769).
There have been 15 large fires (affected area of more than 500 ha), compared to 11 in the same period of 2022 and an average of 4 in the last 10 years.
The forest fire risk period in Spain is getting increasingly longer, and starting earlier each year. Everybody has a responsibility to be vigilant and not discard anything, whether smoking paraphernalia, or litter, as these are one of the primary causes of forest fires.
