In a guerilla campaign to highlight the overcrowding caused by tourism on the island of Mallorca, a group of activists have been placing warning signs advising swimmers of the dangers of going in the sea, warning, for example, of the dangers of jellyfish, but the signs are posted in English, and in Spanish the same sign notes that there is no danger.
The anti-capitalist coordinating entity, Manacor Caterva, has criticized “the tourist overcrowding that Mallorca suffers” by placing the signs in the coves of the municipal area, which indicate in English that bathing is prohibited or not recommended, but reassuring Spaniards that it is not dangerous. As reported by Caterva in a press release, the entity has put up posters that “make the message very clear, which is that the coves of the Islands have been expropriated by tourism.”
Thus, they have indicated that the entity has published posters “charged with humour” that “alert tourists with different messages in English indicating that bathing is not allowed or recommended.” However, the message for locals “makes it clear that there is no danger” or that “the danger is that of mass tourism.” The posters have been distributed in Cala Morlanda, Caló, Cala Petita, Porto Cristo, Cala Murta, Cala Magraner and Cala Bota.
The entity, made up of the organizations Endavant OSAN, Assamblea Antipatriarcal de Manacor and Arrels, as well as individuals, has pointed out that “the usurpation of the coves is just one more expression of how capitalism uses an economic activity such as tourism, taken to the extreme, to freely dry up the territory and to extract the maximum surplus value from the workers». Finally, they have assured that “there are guilty parties and it is necessary to name them, such as the hoteliers or the ‘rafels nadals’ with the total complicity of some municipalities and the Government, the current and the previous one.”
