Conference to look at suicidal behaviour in the elderly

The Official College of Psychology of the Region of Murcia (COPRM) have organised the III Conference on Psychology and Suicide that will be held next Wednesday, September 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the College, and this year it will address suicidal behaviour and older people.

The event will be presented by the COPRM journalist, Carmen Castelo, who will give way to the dean of the College, María Fuster, and the director of the newspaper La Opinión, José Alberto Pardo, who will welcome the event.

Next, according to sources from the organisation, the acting Minister of Health of the Region of Murcia, Juan José Pedreño, is scheduled to speak.

After the counselor’s words, the first opening table will be held (around 10:00 am) in which the Councillor for Women, Conciliation Policies and Seniors of the Murcia City Council, Ascensión Carreño, will intervene; the deputy general director of Older People of the Ministry of Social Policy, Families and Equality, Ascensión Romero; the coordinator of the COPRM Aging Working Group, Inma Méndez; and the coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Working Group of the same institution, Raquel Martínez.

At around 11:00 a.m. the conference ‘Psychological intervention in the prevention of suicidal ideation in older people’ will be given by Ana Belén Sánchez, representative of the Psychology Area of ​​social intervention at the College of Psychology of Castilla y León.

Next, the president of the Federation of Seniors, Simón Párraga, will present the video ‘In first person: do I live with loneliness?’, in which a group of seniors belonging to the Federation of Seniors of Murcia participate.

After the screening, around 12:00 p.m., the round table ‘From experience, what we see and what we do’ will be held, in which the Coordinator of the Aging Psychology GT and member of the General Council of Psychology of Spain and dean of the Official College of Psychology of Castilla y León, Jaime Gutiérrez who will talk about ‘Suicide in older people: A silenced reality’.

Likewise, the GIPEC coordinator of the Official College of Psychology of the Region of Murcia, an expert in addressing suicidal behaviour in emergencies, Ángel Ruiz Ramírez, will discuss ‘Intervention and detection in suicidal crises’; Pablo Avilés Martínez, senior centres professional, will do so on ‘Psychological intervention in older people users of day centres’; while the director of the digital newspaper for seniors ’65ymas.com’ Ana Bedia Rodríguez will tell ‘How to report suicide for seniors’.

The person in charge of the psychology area of ​​social intervention of the Official College of Psychology of the Region of Murcia, Cristina Pastor, will moderate.

Finally, the conclusions of the day will be presented and the event will be closed by the dean of the Official College of Psychology of the Region of Murcia, María Fuster.
