Marriage dissolutions increase 0.5 percent

The demands for marital dissolution, annulments, separations and divorces increased only slightly during the third quarter of the year in figures very similar to those registered between July and September 2022.

The 19,608 demands registered in total in the judicial bodies have represented an interannual increase in the 0.5 percent, according to data collected by the Statistics Service of the General Council of the Judiciary.

In the period analysed, divorce requests by mutual agreement (11,303) decreased by 0.2 percent, while non-consensual divorces (7,522) increased by 1.5% compared to last year. Regarding separation demands, non-consensual requests (224) decreased by 6.3% and consensual requests (545) increased by 6.7 percent.

The number of annulment claims, 14, was 17.6 percent lower than those presented during the third quarter of 2022.

If the total number of marital dissolution demands for the quarter is compared to the population as of January 1, 2023, it is observed that the highest number of dissolution demands per 100,000 inhabitants occurred in the Canary Islands, with 51.8; Valencian Community, with 49.2; La Rioja, with 47.5; Murcia, with 44.8; Castilla-La Mancha, with 43.6; Andalusia, with 43.5; and the Balearic Islands, with 42.8.

In all these territories, the rate exceeds the national average, which stood at 40.9 claims per 100,000 inhabitants. On the contrary, the lowest rates were in the Basque Country, with 33.2; Castilla y León, with 33.9; Madrid, with 34.5; and Navarra, with 35.3.

The judicial bodies received a total of 4,664 consensual requests for custody and maintenance of non-marital children, which increased by 5% compared to those presented a year ago. Those without consensus, 5,724, increased by 4.3 percent.

For their part, the modifications of consensual measures, 2,699, experienced a year-on-year increase of 7.4 percent and those that were not consensual, 6,542, of 2.5 percent.
