Italy and Japan top destinations for Spanish tourists

According to data from a recent travel trends survey carried out by insurance broker Chapka, Spaniards continue to show a strong interest in international travel, with 54% planning to explore European destinations in 2024.

Italy, France, and Germany lead the preferences, reflecting the growing inclination towards experiences on the continent. 36% are planning their 2024 vacation to a destination beyond European borders and only 10% believe they will only do so in Spain.

Compared to previous years, non-European destinations such as the United States and Japan, which had kept their borders closed due to the pandemic, are regaining popularity

Chapka’s survey, based on the participation of more than 4,000 domestic travellers, identified the 10 most outstanding destinations for Spaniards in 2024, led by Italy, followed by France, Germany, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Iceland, Norway, and Greece.

Looking back to 2023, 40% of respondents feel they have travelled enough, while 29% feel they have done very little or not at all. On the contrary, 21% believe they have exceeded their travel expectations and 10% claim to have travelled abundantly.

Looking ahead to next year, the survey reflects that, despite fears of an economic recession, Spanish citizens maintain their desire to travel. 58% of the population intends to increase their trips in 2024 compared to 2023, although 23% will opt for getaways or short trips.

Regarding travel limitations, three out of four Spaniards point to money as the determining factor, followed by lack of time (39%). 10% feel that they do not need to travel more and 2% limit their trips motivated by ecological concerns.

Finally, when asking about unrestricted dream destinations, Japan tops the list, followed by Australia, the United States, New Zealand, and the Maldives.
