Today, Friday, a very special delivery will arrive in Madrid, specifically at the Teatro Real, as all of the equipment for the televised Extraordinary Christmas Lottery, commonly referred to as El Gordo, will be installed before one of the most eagerly waited events of the year.
Around a dozen workers are on site to unload more than a thousand kilos of material from several trucks, and once again, for another year, the protagonists will be the “bombos”, the large metal drums from which the numbers will be selected.
Journalists, cameras, and photographers will capture how, with great care, the operators will place the four spectacular drums in the centre of the stage, two ‘starters’ and two ‘reserves’ in case the first ones do not work quite well.
This year the jackpot funds amounts to 3,7 billion euro, and 70% will be distributed in prizes, meaning that on December 22, 2,5 billion euro in prizes will be snatched up by some lucky participants.
El Gordo itself offers 4 million euro for the series; the second prize, 1,250,000 euro for the series; and the third, 500,000 euro for the series. The prizes are usually shared as tickets are sold in portions of tenths.
