Spanish News Headlines
The Social Court No. 28 of Barcelona has recognised the mental health problems suffered by a content moderator who worked for a Meta subcontractor as an occupational accident. The magistrates consider that the mental consequences of workers who are dedicated to reviewing content on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Meta or YouTube are the responsibility of their employers.
The government this week approved a reduction in personal income tax withholdings for low and medium incomes. The rule raises the minimum amount to make withholdings from 15,000 euro to 15,876 euro, which will allow those who earn the minimum wage in 2024 not to have personal income tax withholdings on their payroll.
EU legislators reached a provisional deal on rules to combat gender-based violence and protect its victims, especially women and victims of domestic violence. The informal agreement reached by Parliament and Council negotiators includes measures to prevent rape, tougher rules on cyber violence, and better support for victims. For the first time, there will be EU-wide rules on the criminalisation of certain forms of gender-based violence and better access to justice, protection and prevention. Member states will aim to raise awareness that non-consensual sex is considered a criminal offence.

Things to Do Today
In Torrevieja, the little ones who will fill calle Ramón Gallud with their costumes. The “Carnival de los Coles”, the children’s parade, is once again the moment in which the entire school community of the town parades showing those suits and costumes that they have made themselves in the educational centres. This fun parade will begin at 5:00 p.m., from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, culminating in Paseo Vista Alegre, where there will be entertainment, dancing and chocolate for the little ones to enjoy.
And as a great novelty for 2024, for the first time in the history of the Torrevieja Carnival, starting at 8:30 p.m., calle Ramón Gallud will once again host the 1st Parade Competition of Foreign Troupes of the Torrevieja Carnival.
Ara Milikian concert in Torrevieja International Auditorium is cancelled.
Orihuela Carnival parade in the centre of the town will take place on February 9, at 6:30 p.m. The route will be very similar to last year, starting on C/Alfonso XIII, continuing along Avda Teodomiro and ending at Glorieta. The Orihuela Costa Carnival parade is next weekend.
Santa Pola Carnival located in the centre of Santa Pola and will begin at 5:30 p.m. with batucada and giant clowns in the Glorieta. From 7:00 p.m., the traditional costume contest will begin in the municipal tent next to the Castle.
Saturday 10 February
Torrevieja Municipal Swimming Pool is closed today for a competition.
Another KEY DATE for Torrevieja Carnival with the “Grand Night Parade” will be held starting at 8:00 p.m. along calle Ramón Gallud, leaving from the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. With a more informal, fun and partying atmosphere, where troupes that did not participate in the contest parade will add magic to this spectacular and fun parade. It will end on the Paseo Vista Alegre stage, where the rhythm of the best local DJs will give way to the long-awaited awards ceremony, ending with a surprise performance.
Guardamar del Segura will be in carnival mode from 17:00 today, continuing tomorrow.
Gran Alacant Carnival at 12:00, a fun children’s festival will begin outside the José Antonio Alemañ municipal pavilion with the participation of the Pampol Teatre company, which will feature live music, puppets, games and dances.
Sunday 11 February
11-2 Day.
In Torrevieja, the culmination of the Torrevieja Carnival will be the “National Competition of Comparsas and Chirigotas”, at the Torrevieja Municipal Theatre at 6:00 p.m. Although that same morning, the brass bands will once again take to the streets of the centre in the 3rd edition of the CarnaBares.
Carnival also continues in Guardamar del Segura.
In Elche, a 10k road race will raise funds for good causes through the Rotary Club.
Runners will also be taking to the streets of Orihuela, with an 8k race, as well as the 32.2k half marathon. This is also a special event in so much as it’s the 25 anniversary of this race.

Local Markets
On Friday there’s are weekly market in Dolores, Jacarilla, Los Montesinos, Pilar de la Horadada, Torrellano (Elche), and Torrevieja.
On Saturday, you can get your bargains at the markets in Alicante, Almoradi, Catral, Elche, Moncayo (Guardamar), Orihuela, Playa Flamenca (Orihuela Costa), San Anton (Elche), San Fulgencio (La Marina), and Santa Pola.
And on Sunday, Algorfa (Zoco), Campoverde (Pilar de la Horadada), Corvera (Murcia), Guardamar El Limonero (Lemon Tree Road), Guardamar (N-332), Elche Mercadillo del Martínez Valero, La Aparecida (Orihuela), La Murada (Orihuela), and Pilar de la Horadada (El Toro).
The roads will of course be busy around those locations.
Traffic and Travel
On the roads of Spain, coinciding with the weekends of the winter months, an increase in traffic is expected on the main routes, national roads, and motorways towards rest areas, second homes and mountain areas for practicing winter sports.
FRIDAY
Movements out of large urban centres and increased circulation on the main communication routes towards rest areas, second homes and mountain areas, the least favourable time being between 7 and 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
Travel out of large urban centres, many of which will be short trips to recreation and leisure areas close to large towns, as well as increased circulation on the main communication routes to rest areas, second homes and mountain areas, the busiest times being between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
SUNDAY
Movements in the entrance direction to the large urban centres along the main communication road axes that channel the entire return movement, in particular on motorways, as well as along the access roads to areas of mountain with winter sports practice, at an unfavourable time between 6 and 10 p.m.
If you are going to the mountains, remember to take snow chains (click this link to browse snow chains on Amazon). Winter tyres are also permitted. If you come across a blue circular sign showing snow chains, it is obligatory to have them fitted on your wheels before passing the sign. In accordance with Spanish Traffic Law, you are not permitted further without having them installed. It is both dangerous, and illegal.
