E-commerce spend reaches 21 billion euro

E-commerce turnover in Spain increased by 15.2% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2023 to reach 21,8 billion euro, according to the latest e-commerce data available on the CNMCData portal.

The activity sectors with the highest income were travel agencies and tour operators, with 13.2% of the total turnover; air transport, with 5.6% and clothing, in third place, with 5.2%. Looking at the number of transactions, in the third quarter of 2023, more than 385 million transactions were recorded, 15.6% more. Land passenger transportation led the ranking for sales (7%).

Regarding geographical segmentation, 44.6% of revenues in the third quarter of 2023 were destined for Spain. The remaining 55.4% corresponded to purchases originating in Spain made abroad.

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is purchased from abroad to Spain and what is purchased from Spain abroad) shows a deficit of 8,98 billion euro. By number of transactions, 36.8% of sales were destined for Spain and 63.3% abroad.

The business volume of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad was 12 billion euro, 20.1% more than in the third quarter of the previous year. 94.1% of purchases from Spain abroad were made in stores located in the European Union. The branches of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to abroad were travel agencies (10.5%) and clothing (8%).

For its part, sales from abroad with Spain reached a turnover of 3.1 billion euro, 16.7% more than in the third quarter of the previous year. 60.7% of purchases from abroad came from the European Union. Likewise, the areas of activity related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental and hotels) accounted for 63.6% of purchases from abroad with Spain.

E-commerce revenues within Spain rose 6.5% year-on-year to 6,6 billion euro. Travel agencies and tour operators led the billing within Spain (8.4%).
