The Guardia Civil has arrested two people for committing around fifty robberies on the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca in the last two years. The total value of the stolen goods is estimated at two million euro, including more than 20 luxury watches and numerous pieces of jewellery.
The detainees, of Albanian origin, selected victims with high purchasing power who lived in the Balearic Islands. They usually chose them when they went out to luxury restaurants and exclusive beaches, and they even went so far as to mark their vehicles with GPS devices to identify the houses where they lived and where they were robbed.
Later, while the victims were sleeping, the thieves entered their homes and stole mainly high-end jewellery and watches, which were sent to the black market through third parties.
The Guardia Civil investigation began approximately a year ago and, thanks to collaboration with Europol, has confirmed that the detainees were being investigated by police forces in France, Italy, Germany, and Belgium for similar crimes.
These arrests have resulted in the recovery of more than 20 luxury watches valued at around 350,000 euro, along with numerous jewels. Specialised tools for carrying out the thefts, GPS tracking devices and clothing used to avoid being identified during the commission of the crimes have also been found. In total, the value of the thefts committed is estimated to be around two million euro.
The investigation is still ongoing and new arrests are not ruled out in the future, as well as the clarification of further crimes committed in other European countries.
