A minor has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old boy in the town of Isla Mayor, located in the province of Seville. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, 2 July, has sent shockwaves through the local community and sparked significant public outcry.
The victim, named locally as Daniel, was reportedly walking through the town centre with friends at approximately 1:30 a.m. when an altercation broke out near a commercial premises. Sources close to the investigation suggest the motive may have been an attempted robbery or personal dispute, though this remains unconfirmed by police.
Witnesses stated that Daniel was stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen. Emergency services arrived promptly, but despite attempts to stabilise him on-site, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital in Seville. The alleged attacker, also a minor, fled the scene but was detained within 48 hours after an intensive manhunt led by the Guardia Civil.
The arrest was made without incident at a private residence believed to be associated with the suspect’s family. He has since been placed in the custody of juvenile authorities and is awaiting an initial hearing before a juvenile magistrate, where formal charges are expected to include homicide and possession of a weapon.
In the days following the murder, the town of Isla Mayor has been gripped by grief and tension. A minute’s silence was held in Daniel’s memory on Thursday evening, attended by family, classmates, and hundreds of residents. However, the event was marred by disturbances, with some participants directing anger towards the suspect’s family home, reportedly causing minor damage to windows and vehicles nearby.
Local authorities have appealed for calm, and additional police patrols have been deployed to prevent further unrest. The mayor of Isla Mayor, speaking at the vigil, called for “justice through the courts, not through retaliation,” and expressed condolences to Daniel’s family, describing him as “a young man with his life ahead of him, taken far too soon.”
The case has reignited debate around youth violence, knife crime, and juvenile justice in Spain, particularly regarding sentencing guidelines for serious crimes involving minors. Under current Spanish law, the suspect—due to his age—may face a sentence of confinement in a juvenile centre rather than a traditional prison, if found guilty.
The investigation remains active, with the Guardia Civil continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses. A forensic analysis of the weapon believed to have been used is underway.
