A high-profile Hungarian fugitive wanted under a European Arrest Warrant has been detained in Spain by the Policía Nacional, bringing to an end a long-standing international manhunt.
The arrest took place following joint efforts between Spanish authorities and Europol. The suspect had been included on Hungary’s list of most-wanted individuals and was the subject of a red notice issued by Interpol.
While officials have not yet revealed the full identity of the individual, sources close to the operation confirmed the man had been convicted in absentia for multiple serious offences in Hungary, including fraud, falsification of documents, and suspected links to organised crime networks.
According to a statement by the Spanish police, the arrest was carried out without incident, and the suspect is now being held in custody pending extradition proceedings. The Spanish courts will determine the timeframe for his return to Hungary, where he is expected to serve a prison sentence.
The fugitive had allegedly been living under a false identity in Spain for several months, using forged documentation and moving frequently to avoid detection. Investigators tracked him down using a combination of digital surveillance, human intelligence, and cooperation with Hungarian law enforcement agencies.
The Policía Nacional highlighted the operation as a successful example of cross-border coordination under the EU’s judicial and policing frameworks. A spokesperson noted, “This case demonstrates Spain’s commitment to international cooperation and ensuring that no one can evade justice across borders.”
This is the second major international arrest in Spain this month, reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in Europe’s shared security and justice operations.
Further legal proceedings will now follow, with the suspect appearing before the Spanish Audiencia Nacional, which handles extradition cases.
