Overtaking a cyclist is not simply another overtaking manoeuvre. The cyclist has little physical protection, while the motor vehicle can weigh many times more and travel considerably faster.
From 1 October 2026, drivers overtaking cyclists on interurban roads must reduce their speed by at least 20 km/h below the applicable limit, maintain at least 1.5 metres of lateral separation and, where there is more than one lane in the same direction, change completely into the adjacent lane.
The most important rule, however, is one of judgement: if the conditions do not allow a safe pass, wait.
