ARRESTED FOR INSTALLING SPY APP ON MOBILE PHONE

The Guardia Civil in Burgos have arrested a 23 year old male, identified with the initials D.H.P., charged with a crime of discovery and disclosure of secrets and against privacy, after installing an application on his partner´s mobile phone in order to keep a track of calls, text messages and the location.

The arrest took place after the owner of the mobile phone became concerned over fast battery drainage on her phone. The matter was reported to the authorities who investigated the device and believed charges are appropriate.

It is believed that the man installed the application whilst pretending to carry out another task on the handset, thus installing the “app”. The installation allowed the accused to monitor the activities of the phone, without the user realising.

A number of similar applications are available for mobile phones, some marketed as being just for fun, others for apparently legitimate reasons such as monitoring the whereabouts of children or family members, with their permission and knowledge.

Upon identifying and locating the man, he immediately admitted the facts, and was presented to the courts in Burgos.
