The President of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, expressed “great relief” on Friday that the Spanish airport authority, AENA, has decided to take over the management of Corvera airport.
Valcárcel made the statement in response to questions from the press at the Madrid Senate, confirming the problems with reaching an agreement with Aeromur, the current concessionaire of Corvera airport, explaining that the company had problems arising from the financial crisis and that it is understood that the budget and balances originally planned are not the same as in the current financial climate.
He also once again confirmed that San Javier would close to passenger traffic, in order to provide better economic performance of Corvera, by eliminating the competition. However, quite when that closure might happen still cannot be confirmed, as “the question is what is first: the chicken or the egg? To close San Javier first or open Corvera and, from then start working on the closure of San Javier?” Valcárcel explained.
In conclusion, Valcárcel emphasised that what matters is that “AENA is determined, willing, and it has shown over and over again, the intention to operate the airport and this is what reassures me greatly”.
