According to the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), the astronomical summer will begin on Friday the 21st of June, at 07:04 GMT, 09:04 local time, and will bring with it one of the longest summer seasons in recent centuries, lasting 93 days and 15 hours, until the arrival of autumn on September the 22nd.
On Friday the 21st, there will be 15 hours and 3 minutes of sunshine, based on Madrid´s day, which is almost 6 hours difference to the 9 hours and 17 minutes of the shortest day, December the 21st.
From an astronomical point of view, the morning skies will be dominated by the presence of Mars and Jupiter, both approaching each other in the sky up to the 22nd of July, Venus and Saturn dominating the early part of the night sky, with the 20th of September being on a minimum distance of about 4 degrees.
The first full moon of summer will be on the 23rd of June, then the 22nd of July, 21st of August and 19th of September.
The traditional Perseids meteor shower will occur on the 12th of August, and will coincide with the moon nearing the crescent phase, although there will not be either a solar or lunar eclipse during the season.
The Summer Triangle, an astronomical asterism involving an imaginary triangle drawn on the northern hemisphere’s celestial sphere, will be visible throughout, with its defining vertices at Altair, Deneb, and Vega, the brightest stars in the three constellations of Aquila, Cygnus, and Lyra, respectively.
