Due to rising fuel costs, All Nippon Airways has announced its intention to retire its fleet of Boeing 747 jumbo jets, replacing them with smaller, and more fuel efficient aircraft. Their main rival, Japan Airlines, has already retired their fleet.
Although the move is significant in terms of aviation history, it will also no doubt disappoint children and adults alike, as one of the aircraft is the world famous “Pikachu Jumbo”, which is painted with a range of characters from the animated series “Pocket Monsters”, or “Pokemon” for short.
The good news is that the airline plans to do a farewell tour for the Pikachu Jumbo, which first made her appearance in 1998, operating on the Haneda to Sapporo route linking Tokyo to Hokkaido. There will be three round-trip flights a day until the 8th of August, if you want to catch them all, although she had previously flown on a number of international routes.
Some “grown up” passengers had said that they were a little embarrassed to board the joyful aircraft in the past though, but their relief may be short lived as the airline still intends to fly a Boeing 777 under the Pokemon colour scheme, which they simply call the “Pokemon Jet”.
