LOCAL POLICE CRACKDOWN ON STREET CLEANLINESS

Local Police in Alicante have been actively involved in a campaign launched by the town hall to try to keep the streets of the city clean.

The aim of the initiative, launched through the combined efforts of both the Urban and Security departments of the Partido Popular run council, is partly to have a “systematic awareness campaign”, in order to “eradicate at least 50%” of the volume illegally dumped waste on the streets, whilst, at the same time, denouncing and punishing those residents and businesses who fail to adhere to the rules to keep the streets clean.

This is the latest campaign to try to improve the image of the city, after the success of an anti-graffiti struggle launched earlier in the year, alongside one to try to encourage correct use of waste bins on the beaches of San Juan this summer.

In a press conference, Andrés Llorens, the councillor responsible for urban matters, said that by having 20 people on the street focussing on the problem each day, the teams are able to identify the worst affected areas and deal with the most common offenders. Councillor for public security, Juan Seva, said that his department are providing 7 people in the morning and the same number in the afternoon, specifically to facilitate an improved response by the police to deal with these “most common offences and antisocial behaviours of citizens that have the greatest impact on our city”.

The Alicante city government is run by the PP, under the management of Mayor Sonia Castedo Ramos, born in 1971, elected in 2008 following the resignation of her predecessor, and the first woman ever to occupy this position of Mayor of Alicante.
